A good war-date printed, 1p. 8vo., Union Army Military document, outlining the prescribed methods of administrating the amnesty oath to returning Southern citizens and soldiers into the Union. Signed in type by Secretary of State WILLIAM H. SEWARD and issued by the command of Union General Quincy Gillmore, being General Order No. 83, "Headquarters Department of the South, Hilton Head, S. C., June 6, 1865." These orders issued by the Department of State, May 29, 1865, read, in part: "A copy of the President's Amnesty Proclamation…is herewith appended…so as to insure its benefits to the people and guard the Government against fraud…the proclamation may be taken and subscribed before any commissioned officer, civil, military or naval, in the service of the United States…all who receive such oaths are…authorized to give certified copies…to this department where they will…where they will be deposited and remain in the archives of the Government…". Signed and made official by Capt. T. D. Hodges of the 35th USCT. Two binding punch holes at left margin, else VG.
