Partly-printed Document Signed, “R.E. Fenton” as Governor and Commander-in-Chief, 1pp. oblong octavo, May 24, 1865, Albany, New York, State of New York, Paymaster General’s Office, being a “Certificate of Indebtedness” “entitling said Town to a reimbursement of Thirty three thousand, four hundred dollars; the comprtroller is hereby requested to issue to E. Whipple Supr. of Lansaigburgh on account of the bonds of the State of New York for Twenty six thousand Dollars, which with Seven thousand four hundred Dollars, paid in money, is in full of the bounties by Chapter 29, Laws of 1865, and the acts supplementary thereto...” Cancellation marks, else Fine. FENTON, Reuben Eaton (1819-1885) He was Governor of New York from 1865 to 1868, elected in 1864 and 1866. In 1868, he was among the candidates to be Vice President but the nomination went eventually to Schuyler Colfax. In January 1869, he was elected a U.S. Senator from New York and served from 1869 to 1875. In 1872 he was among the Republicans opposed to President Ulysses S. Grant who joined the short-lived Liberal Republican Party.
