A good battle of Gettysburg/Camp Letterman Hospital related letter, 1p. 4to., written by Surgeon Henry Janes (formerly of the 3rd Vermont Vols.) recalling his being overwhelmed in his duties while running Camp Letterman, Gettysburg while seeing to the needs and care of the wounded from both sides following from battle of Gettysburg, reading, in part: "Waterbury, Vt., Dec. 29, 1870. I have the honor to forward…the supplementary quartermaster returns…at the time the issues were made which…was…after the battle of Gettysburg there were under my charge some 60 different hospitals with over 20,000 Union & Rebel wounded…I had no clerks at that time except such as I was able to pick up from among the slightly wounded& sick stragglers…it was a physical impossibility at first to make out the reports to the Medical Dept…as fast as they were called for although I kept my office open 17 hours a day. As Capt. Ranken forwarded me no invoices I forgot receipting for the stores & supposed that he had expensed them on his own returns as he might properly have down thereby saving considerable trouble to both your department & myself…Respectfully, H. Janes".
