Four page ALS, July 11, 1885, St. Louis, MO., fine. Sherman writes a friendly letter to the widow of Joseph C. Audenried, who was a member of Sherman's staff during the Civil War. Soon after Audenried's death in 1880, there is speculation that Sherman had an affair with Audenried's wife, Mary Jane. The letter reads in part "I am really glad for your sake that your brother is back home. I hope he benefitted by his long voyage….I am committed to go to Mansfield for the Reunion of the Sherman family….and afterward to New York. Today I dined with Mrs. McKay, and after dinner drove through the park….a wide circuit taking in the new house I am building in place of the one that burned down, which will be finished and ready for a tenant in September….I am as well as I should expect. Indeed my barber said this morning I look as young as in Atlanta in 1864, but I know that is flattery. The only anxiety I feel is from Minnie, of course I must provide for her and her child till Fitch is re-established in business. This with my own family keeps me close. So I must lay low….and if I can I will see you in August. W.T. Sherman". A fine content letter, especially the reference to looking as young as he did in Atlanta in 1864.
