Chromolithograph of General Ulysses S. Grant, 14”x17”, with copyright stamp on verso: "Warranted Oil Colors. Enter according to Act of Congress in the year 1865, by E. C. Middleton, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Published by E. C. Middleton, Cincinnati, O." Period gold gilt frame. From a famous photograph of Grant, this image by Middleton, along with another of Lincoln, was extremely popular. Middleton's "oil print" process, produced an affordable "oil painting" for those wanting a portrait of the nation's heroes at the end of the Civil War.
