One page letter, June 14, 1860. A copy of a letter sent to the Editor of the New York Tribune from a "Reader of the Daily Tribune", pertaining to who Delegates to the Republican Convention from Vermont voted for. The letter reads in full "Political Intelligence Vermont at Chicago. To the Editor of the New York Tribune, Sir, An article appeared in your daily paper of the 30 of May stating that at the state convention at Northfield in Vermont the third of April last it was proposed to instruct the delegates to the Chicago convention to cast the vote of this state for Mr. Seward. Who the author of that piece is I know not but I do know that his statement is a mere fabrication and utterly false. There was no attempt to instruct the delegates to cast the vote for Mr. Seward. Nor anyone else had there been any effort made to instruct them. I have no doubt but what they would have been instructed to cast the vote for Mr. Seward. The writer of this piece was present at the Northfield convention during the whole of the time had there been any thing of the kind. I should have none of it. A reader of the Daily Tribune. Vermont June 14th, 1860. Will Mr. Greeley please insert the above in the Daily and Weekly Tribune". On the back of the letter it reads "Copy of a letter sent Horace Greeley & Co". We have "fixed" the grammer to make it easier to read, but it is evident from the letter that the delegates from Vermont never had any intention to cast their votes for Seward at the Chicago convention that was held on May 16-18. Vermont did cast their votes for Lincoln, the eventual winner of the nomination. A fascinating letter.
