A great Northern woman's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain Sallie Cope, Prairie City, [Illinois], May 17, 1861 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…a sad accident happened in town…little John Griffin was out cutting corn stalks, was riding on the machine and was thrown off…and killed immediately. Was cut and mashed up very bad. The family is almost crazy about it. War what awful things about war. None of my friends have enlisted yet. Would hate very much to have them to. There never was such a man as old Abe. Perhaps there would never have been such times as now…we are all true democrats and for the Union, believe not in republican or abolitionist doctrines nor never did. My friends all voted a democratic ticket and I would have done at the same if allowed the privilege. Hurrah for Douglas, Johnson & the Union too…". A fragment of the original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
