War-date father's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Homer Sackett, Warren, Conn., Nov. 20, 1864, to his son Augustine Sackett, in part: "…we were becoming quite anxious to hear from you not knowing where you went from the James River Oct. 12…you expressed a wish in some way to fight our Northern traitors, as they could not be got south and be met on equal ground with their friends…you would like to meet them north with our favorite weapon the ballot. They have been met and a most Glorious Victory achieved. With Little Mack the Confederacy comes down. What cause for thanksgiving is this. Every one that loves his country will take courage and thank God…Homer…has been enabled to take a part in all the battles of the valley under Gen. Sheridan…the rebus mean to try them again…they will not find them asleep again…Miner Strong [Pvt. Minor Strong WIA (leg) Cedar Creek, Va., 10/19/64] is home on furlough, has a wound 19th Oct. the fore side of his leg 1/2 way above the knee, by a ball passing through. [He] is now able to walk with a staffs greatly improved since home before, is a soldier & a man in good health. We are anxiously waiting to hear from Gen. Sheridan and army. Should go through Georgia and S. Carolina come up in the rear of Savannah and Charleston and take possession. It would be some thing like him. The great thing of late has been to give the soldiers…a Thanksgiving supper…Flora is quite well this fall, says her lessons are more interesting than before. Hope to see her Christmas. She had a chance to vote for Lincoln. Their department gave 165 Union, 56 Copper. Miss. Wadley told the [?] the might leave but none went…Cousin Alfred's funeral [Sgt. Alfred Hatch 7th Conn. Vols., WIA James Island, SC 6/16/62 & Deep Bottom, Va., 8/16/64. DOW 9/9/64] was attended the 9th of Nov. Mr. Murdock preached. Said Alfred Hatch nobly died in defense of his country. Ones life was estimated by his deeds not number of years…your father, Homer Sackett." The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Engineer, U. S. Str. Mattabasett, 3rd Division, North Atlantic Squadron, via Fortress Monroe.", is included. VG.
