A good war-date home front letter, 1p. folio, written by Josiah Ahlem, Guilford, Ohio, Aug. 21, 1864, in part: "…the big draft will come off soon…this township will be clear…we got all the men hired to fill our quota. It cost the township about twelve thousand dollars. This is taking money away very fast…can your township get clear by substitutes. This war is pressing the people hard. I hope it will be the last call…will any body vote for Old Abe again…Josiah R. Ahlem." Also included is the original transmittal cover. Interestingly, in the autumn of 1862 Ahlem tried to do his part enlisting as a private in the 125th Ohio Vols., but the 33 year-old was rejected. VG.
