Four page letter, Troy, NY., May 19, 1865. From E.P. Dodge to Friend Coggin. Excellent content letter pertaining to viewing Lincoln's body laying in state in Albany on April 26, 1865, in part "I have seen Lincoln and I think that I can boast of as long as I live. I stayed in Albany all night and could not get any place to sleep and had to keep awake all night. But I was bound to see him if I had to go with out sleep till he left. It was about 3 o'clock in the morning when I saw him. I went in three times. Such a forehead as he had I never saw on any man. There were bands 5 bands of music, 3 regiments of soldiers, a number of Major Generals in including John A. Dix, and several thousand fireman formed the procession to the cars….". The doors to the state capitol opened at 1:30 AM on the 26th with thousands of mourners waiting to get a glimpse of the fallen President. The author of this excellent content letter was lucky enough to view the President three times!
