This Assassination Grouping consists of three pieces as follows. Most important, the Crepe ribbon is sewn unto a card which is 2-3/4” x 4-3/4.” In period ink, a notation is made at the bottom of the card, “The slip on the reverse side of this card will tell the ‘History’ of this piece of Crepe. - A. Lincoln 1865 - James Garfield 1881 - Will McKinley - 1901.” On the reverse is a period newspaper clipping identifying this crepe “John A. Uhler ... is wearing a crepe mourning badge for President Mckinley that has a history. When Abraham Lincoln was shot Mr. Uhler paid his tribute ... by wearing the same crepe badge. ... When James Garfield fell at the hand of the assassin Guiteau, the badge was again brought forth .... And now for the third time ... Mr. Uhler again wears the token of mourning for a fallen president.” The item is passed on in a August 26, 1904 letter written by John Uhler which reads in part “I enclose you a small ‘rememberance’ ... the piece of crepe was a larger piece you may judge. I divided it among friends ...” The original envelope is also present, showing the recepient to be “Master. A. Lincoln Shuk Jr..
