GEARY, John W. (1819-1873), an American lawyer, politician, Freemason, and a Union general in the American Civil War. He was the final alcalde and first mayor of San Francisco, a governor of the Kansas Territory, and the 16th governor of Pennsylvania. Scarce and displayable, 15-1/2” x 17”, full seal, partially printed commission for Cornelius McClellan who “having been duly elected and returned, is hereby commissioned CAPTAIN of the Graybill Zouaves ...” The document is dated April 13, 1872, Harrisbur Pennsylvania, and signed by “Jno W. Geary” as Pennsylvania governor.
