Colorful and graphic 10" in diameter metal plate, Vienna Art Plates, W.H. Owens & Co. Manchester, VA., 1905 copyright date on the back. The plate depicts the rescue of Captain John Smith by Indian maiden Pocahontas (center image). This plate was issued to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, Virginia in 1907. At the left edge is an image of John Smith, and at the right edge is an image of Pocahontas. The settlement of Jamestown predated the arrival of the Mayflower by over 10 years, and it is considered quite a coup to be able to trace your ancestry to one of the original settlers. A scarce commemorative, minor wear, small edge nick at extreme left edge. A fine example.
