War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. William Hazen Noyes, Co. E, 12th Mass. Vols. "Camp near warrantor Junction, Va., April 28, 1862", in part: "…the R. R. runs very irregular as they run to accommodate the army…Capt. Saltmarsh was aging to leave us…he wanted to get a chance in the Navy…he has been commissioned as 2nd Lieut. in the Marines & has resigned his commission here…Dr. Baxter our surgeon has got a commission as Brigade Surgeon in the regulars…we have got the news that comes from Rebel sources of the Capture of New Orleans…[several words missing in section repair]…we were in McDowell's Department as it is reported that we are soon to join the rest of Gen. Banks force…perhaps Gen. McDowell directs our movements now or Gen. Abercrombie has full command. The 12th & 16th Ind. Regts go home in a week or fortnight…enclosed is a perfect facsimile Confederate Note as I have seen the Real one also a cross made from a bone found at Bull Run. This engraved on this sheet of paper is a very good picture of our camp that we had at Frederick. We are now the 2nd Brigade in Gen. Banks Division…W. Hazen Noyes". The highlight of this letter is the fine illustration accomplished by famed Jewish lithographer L. N. Rosenthal, Philadelphia, copyrighted 1862, boldly, entitled: "CAMP OF THE 'WEBSTER REGIMENT' 12 Mass. Vols. Cantonment Hicks_1st Brigade_Genl. Banks Division, near Frederick, Md." A rare piece of Civil War stationery and the first we have had the pleasure to offer. A bit light with some archival repairs, toning and soiling, plus replaced one by two inch section repair at the centerfold margin on the first page. Overall VG
