WEBSTER, Daniel (1782-1852) was a leading American senator and statesman. He was the outstanding spokesman for American nationalism with powerful oratory that made him a key Whig leader. He spoke for conservatives, and led the opposition to Democrat Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party. He was a spokesman for modernization, banking, and industry, but not for the common people who composed the base of his opponents in Jacksonian Democracy. Webster served in the House of Representatives for 10 years (representing New Hampshire), in the Senate for 19 years (representing Massachusetts), and was appointed the United States Secretary of State under three presidents. Autograph LetterSsigned, 1 ½ pp, June 19, 1827, Boston. Old mounting strip at extreme left edge, light age, else fine. Webster writes as a United States Senator from Massachusetts. Reads in full "My dear Sir, Some of our gentlemen, in this part of the country, who take an interest in the Agriculture & Manufacturers National Meeting in Harrisburg, feel a good deal of solitude that Delegates should appear from the state of New York. They are fully aware that there may be difficulty in assembling persons together from all parts of the state to appoint Delegates: but the great importance of having New York represented at the meeting, will, they hope, lead to some measure calculated to bring about a desirable end. It is not, perhaps, essential that these Delegates should all be appointed at one general meeting. Local meetings, each appointing its own Delegates might, it is thought, accomplish the purpose, if it were found impracticable to convene a general one. As the Gentlemen are desirous of corresponding with their friends in New York on the subject. I have taken the liberty to address this to you, & similar letters to three or four others to the end, mainly, that the Gentlemen may themselves communicate with you, for the more full statement of their objects & wishes. I am, Sir, with very true regard, Yours, Daniel Webster". This convention was of the utmost importance to the agriculture and manufacturing business in the United States, as it pertained to taxes, tariffs, and other important financial considerations for these entities.
