John Quincy Adams U.S. Revenue Marine General Order Death Announcement. Two pages, printed on first, 8" x 10", February 25, 1848. Signed in type by R.J. Walker, Secretary of the Treasury. Also signed by Lt. S.C. Toss in ink, fine. The former President had just died two days before this announcement was issued, and reads "The President has with heartfelt sorrow announced the death of the patriot and statesman John Quincy Adams. As a tribute of respect to the memory of the illustrious deceased, the officers of the Revenue Marine will wear the customary badges of mourning during the period of six months. Twenty one minute guns will be fired, commencing at meridian of the day next succeeding the receipt of this order, by each vessel in commission; and the colors hoisted at half mast for one week". The Revenue Marine Service was formed in 1790 as an armed custom enforcement service, and maritime law enforcement. It was changed to the Revenue Cutter Service in 1894. We have seen Adams death announcements issued by the navy, but this is the first announcement we have seen issued by the Revenue Marine Service.
