GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885). Union general who forced Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia to captiulate to end the Civil War and 18th President of the United States (1869-1877). Partly-printed Document Signed “U.S. Grant” 1p. quarto, January 29th, 1875, Washington, and reads in full “I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to a Warrant for the pardon of Reuben Stringfellow dated this day and signed by me; and for so doing this shall be his warrant...” Fine.
