Cabinet card photograph of future President William McKinley, Andrew Price's Studio, Cleveland, Ohio, ca. late 1860's. Corner nick at upper right corner mount, else fine. A very rare, and early image, of McKinley, taken shortly after the end of the Civil War. Most likely taken as a newly appointed attorney in Warren, Ohio. Prior to his public service McKinley served with the 23rd Ohio in the Civil War, reaching the rank of Major, and saw much action, especially at the battle at Antietam. At a Confederate assault at Berryville McKinley had his horse shot out from under him, but did not sustain any injuries. After the war he became an attorney, and then continued his public service, attaining the highest office in the land, the Presidency, before being assassinated in September 1901. Early images of McKinley are quite scarce, and rarely appear on the market. We know of only two or three images of McKinley taken while serving in the Civil War, and another taken at the age of 15. A wonderful opportunity to acquire a true rarity.
