Fine, sharp, detailed early Civil War tintype photo; large 3¼ x 4¼. Standing young, handsome fellow in wide brim hat, civilian type overcoat and high cavalry boots; wide leather waist belt into which are jammed two Colt Model 1860 percussion .44 caliber "Army" revolvers. Buckle is Union type with eagle and wreath. Carrying at his side a Model 1860 Union cavalry saber. Wearing wide brimmed, low crown, black felt hat. Seems a handkerchief (possibly a document) protruding from chest pocket. Original fancy gilt frame; all exc. +; original fancy embossed leatherette case with center panel of floral designs (all exc.; some wear outside and a bit weak on the back hinge). Old label with it it says "Samuel H. , VA" and accompanying it is a research through the Virginia state library and their reply October 2, 1958 with identification of Samuel H. Brady as a private in Company L 5'th Regiment "Stonewall Brigade Virginia Infantry [also known as the] West Augusta Guards." (no other definitive provenance). Fine tintype image and every indication the fellow is Confederate.
