TAFT, William Howard. (1857-1930) Twenty-seventh President 1909-13, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court 1921-30, Secretary of War 1904-8, Governor-general of Philippine Islands. Taft was the first President to open a baseball season by a pitching a ball on April 14, 1910, starting the American League game between Washington and Philadelphia! Typed Letter Signed “Wm H Taft”, on Supreme Court of the United States letterhead, February 19, 1924, 1pp., VG. Written to Edward Bok, Taft acknowledges Bok’s “inability to comply with Major Moton’s request ...” Major Moton was at the time, president of Tuskegee Institute, a position he held since the death of Dr. Booker T. Washington, founder and first president, in 1915.
