A good California pioneer's letter, 1p., 4to., written by a certain "Ed" while "At Sea", June 16, 1858, in part: "…I am now plowing the waves of the broad Atlantic on board the barque J. P. West of New Bedford bound for the north Pacific Ocean whaling. I shipped to go as far as the Sandwich Islands then to…California. You…will not see me in two or three years…I shall be in California in about three months…we have a good captain and other officers…we have plenty to eat and rink. We have four hours night watch and sleep the forenoon…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
