CUSTER, George Armstrong (1839-1876) Union general who served as Colonel of the 7th Cavalry during the Indian Wars, killed by the Lakota-Sioux at Little Big Horn, Montana, June 25, 1876. Postally used cover, addressed in the hand of General George A. Custer, cancelled May 8, 1871, VG. It is addressed to “Mrs. Genl Custer, Monroe, Mich”, making this a third person signature. The cover is from the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York (a noted luxury hotel (1859-1908).
