Fine carte-de-visite photograph after Brady of CONFEDERATE GENERAL GUSTAVUS W. SMITH. Full image, standing pose in civilian clothes. Backmark: "Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York, from Photographic Negative, from Brady's National Portrait Gallery." With additional stamp from the studio of James S. Waters of Baltimore, Maryland. Nice dark image in exceptionally fine condition. Mount has rounded corners, pencil marking on verso "Gen'l. Smith, C.S.A." otherwise in fine, clean condition. GUSTAVUS WOODSON SMITH (1822-1896) was a graduate of the US Military Academy (1842) and was an instructor in engineering at West Point. Brevetted in the Mexican War, he resigned from the Army in 1854 and worked in New Orleans and in New York City. In Hot Springs, Arkansas, for medical treatment at the outbreak of the Civil War, Smith was suspected of harboring Southern sympathies and was ordered arrested as a "disloyal person." Smith offered his services to the Confederate Government and was commissioned as a Major General CSA in September 1861 from Kentucky. He served in the Peninsular Campaign and was subsequently in command of Confederate coastal defenses in Virginia and North Carolina. Critical of President Davis, he resigned from the army in February 1863 and served as a volunteer ADC to General Beauregard. In June 1864 he became Major General of the Georgia Militia, commanding the 1st. Division attached to the Army of Tennessee. In December 1864 he was given command of Confederate forces in South Carolina and Georgia opposing Sherman's March to the Sea. He surrendered his forces at Macon, Georgia, in April 1865 at the close of the War.
