Fine carte-de-visite photograph of CONFEDERATE GENERAL SAMUEL COOPER, head and shoulders image in civilian clothes. Image measures 3 1/4" X 2 1/8" and is mounted on plain paper measuring 5 3/8" X 4" which is in turn laid down on cabinet cardstock. Mount has rounded corners, early marking on verso in ink "Gen'l Samuel Cooper, C.S.A." Some very small traces of foxing, otherwise in exceptionally fine, clean condition. Nice dark image. Fine carte-de-visite portrait of the highest ranking general in the confederate army, GENERAL SAMUEL COOPER. Cooper was a graduate of the US Military Academy (1815) and served in the Seminole War and in Washington on staff duty during the Mexican War. He worked with JEFFERSON DAVIS during Davis' term as Secretary of War (1852-1856). Cooper was married a sister of Virginia Senator James M. Mason and was one of a few Northern-born officers (New York) who sided with the Confederacy with the outbreak of the Civil War. He was appointed a full General from Virginia in May of 1861 and served as Adjutant and Inspector General of the Confederate Army. His extensive administrative experience in the U.S. Army was extremely helpful to Davis in organizing the Confederate War Department and the Confederate Army. Cooper was the highest ranking General in the Confederate Army. After the war he retired to his farm in Alexandria, Virginia.
