A complete, authentic issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, December 28, 1861, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the front cover is a dramatic engraving of three jailed black women, “Secrets of the Prison Houses - A Cell in the Department of the Washington Jail. ...” Above is the report, “Persecution of Negroes in the Capitol - Astounding Revelations,” which begins to make case of arrests of blacks falsely accused of being being fugitive slaves. From the interior is the engraved center-spread of five vignettes continuing the same theme, “Secrets of the Prison Houses - The Black Hole of Washington, DC. ..” Then on a separate page, a in depth report “Our Illustrations of the Black Hole in Washington.” This report claims that 55 blacks are wrongly being held as fugitive slaves.
