War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on printed 16th New Hampshire Volunteers stationery (listing the field officer's of the regiment), by Pvt. Joseph Cram, Co. G, 16th New Hampshire Vols., "Camp Mansfield, Carrollton, La., Feb. 1, 1863", in part: "…there has been but two deaths in the Regt. Lieut. [Prescott] Jones of Co. E with a fever. His body was sent home and a number of Co. I. He was poisoned by something he bought to eat. He was buried here…oh how I hate this soldiering to be dominated over by such a cursed set of fools as we have is more than I can bare in silence…to be so far from home and friends for these black nasty negroes. I am sick of it but must grin and bear it till the end of my time…if God spares my life…I would like to see some of the officers of this Regt without shoulder straps…we will look over accounts…we shall meet again…on that old shoe bench…I do the coddling for the Co…we have to polish our guns and the brass we have to carry about with us…there is quite a change in the opinion of the boys with all the tender feelings for the black man. A white man can…will go back and say let me alone and the niger may go to the devil. The negros here are treated better than the Union soldier…we are getting sick of such usage and fare…we have had a division drill six Regts nearly 6000 men in one field. They look pretty…direct to Joseph Cram 16 Regt. N. H. V. Co. G. Gen. Banks Div., New Orleans". VG
