Confederate civilian letter, 8 pages (the writer’s name has been blotted out), April 14, 1865, 3 pages are cross written else VG. In small part, “I have not taken a walk for pleasure since the evacuation for there is nothing but humiliating things to be seen ... Richmond and Petersburg are evacuated and it is reported that Lee has surrendered. I hardly an credit the report ... The city is garrisoned now by black and white troops ... Crowds of people are coming into the city daily from their plantations ... people come into the city for protection but I dread the summer to come ... all the white troops are going to be sent to the islands and we will be entirely at the mercy of the negroes. I expect to see dreadful days for the whites will be murdered by them for an insurrection was planned about 4 weeks ago by the negroes and was found out by the authorities and stopped. If they have no fear while their officers are here, how much worse will it be when there is no one here but themselves. ... Although I would not like to die such a death ... Today being the 14th of April, they have had great doing raised their Flag on the ruins of the Fort
