This African carved elephant tusk (2” x 26”) was probably made it in the late 19th century for sale to European buyers. Using iron tools it has been carved spirally with scenes of West African life. The detail is simply extraordinary depicting 58 people, each over 2” tall. The scenes are European and Asian enslaving Africans. In one scene, there are two Africans chained together at the neck; another shows an African being dragged with rope around his neck; another shows a European shaking hands with an African while to while several slaves look on. ... Many more scenes.
