Up until the 1940's the areas listed on this broadside were predominantly white areas. By the late 1940's, these areas experienced "White Flight", as African Americans moved into these neighborhoods. Many white families and businesses moved to the suburbs. New federal housing programs allowed African Americans to rent and buy homes in these neighborhoods, much to the dislike of some, as shown by this broadside. The piece, made of heavy stock paper, measures 8" X 12 1/2", age and wear as shown, but in original untouched condition. It seems that some White residents of this area of Chicago wanted to keep their neighborhoods only inhabited by white residents, with people of color not welcome. The area is now predominately African American, and has had its crime problems over the last 50 years, but urban renewal projects have started a resurgence in the area as of late. A rare, and important, piece of both Chicago, and segregation history.
