Columbia October 8th, 1861 to his wife. In part, Winn provides last minute instructions.; Richmond, October 12, 1861, to his wife. Personal content discussing friends.; Richmond, October 12, 1861, to his wife. Personal content discussing friends.; Richmond, October 16, 1861, to his wife. Personal content discussing friends, Unsigned, incomplete.... plus, (1) letter “John M. Winn”, who served in the SC 1st Infantry, May 30, 1862, 4pp.. In part, “... we found that the regiment was on that road .. we pushed on at doublespeed overtaking them in about one hour .. they were drawn up in line of battle, but it was all a fudge - the Yanks did not come..” He then continues with personal instructions and family updates. ... plus, (7) letters written by “Collier”. Camp Ruffin, SC., April 18, 1861, 2pp. In part, “...you may see ... only suffering from a cold.; Camp Ruffin, SC., April 19, 1861, 2pp. In part, “... we may soon be called to march to Virginia .. this camp base is rough .. I have just received news that a a bloody battle was fought at Baltimore this evening - The Yankees were repulsed .. The 7th NY regiment was enroute to for Washington and Baltomrians told them they could not cross ... consequently a battle ensued ..”; Camp Johnson, June 3rd, 1861, 4pp. In part, “... Col. Williams arrived here this morning who was bourne on B. Jones’ shoulder amid a deafening applause to a box where he responded very patrioticly to the anxious regiment giving every assurance that he would lead on whatever duty or honor called to victory of death. the Col. personally appears to have seen a rough time in the west ...”, signed “C”; Camp Johnson, June 6th, 1861, 4pp, some staining. In part, “... Lieut. B.E. Bee today mustered our rigiment into the Confederate States Service ... Cols. Jenkins and Bacon passed us yesterday carrying five bodies of troops near one thousand each ...”; Adams Run, SC, June 4th, 1862 6pp., VG. In part, “... if in the providence of God your son should fall within by the hand .. of the foe why remember it is in a noble cause ... It is an honor that we should feel proud .. we conscientiously believe we are defending the right sight of Heaven ... better to crushed than live in disgrace ... We have news of a great battle fought on the Chickahominy in which brother John was doubtless engaged ..” ; James battety, SCV Kershaw’s Brigade, Culpepper Va., June 8th, 1863, 2pp., VG. In part, “... will soon advance on enemy from Fredericksburg ... the enemy made an attempt to cross the river but was repelled by Lt. Gen. Hill who was left in possession of the heights. .. the enemy is fortifying Manassas ...” Additionally, there are 2 partial letters signed by “Collier.”
