This is a six piece collection comes directly from the Charles James Faulkner family. Charles James Faulkner was a noted Virginia politician and attorney, was appointed Minister to France on the eve of the Civil War. He resigned upon Lincoln's election and, after a brief period of confinement at Fort Warren by the Federals, returned to Virginia to serve as a Lt. Colonel on Stonewall Jackson's staff. With war's end Faulkner became active in West Virginia politics, serving the new state as a representative in Congress. The most important piece is the Thomas J. Jackson appointment of Faulkner. Still, there are other fascinting items in this grouping. JACKSON, Thomas J. "Stonewall" (1824-1863) Graduate of West Point, he was an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute when war broke out. As a Confederate general he defeated numerous Union opponents, mortally wounded at Chancellorsville. A Southern icon. Autograph Letter Signed, “T.J. Jackson”, Nov. 15th, 1862, 2pp., VG. In part “ Colonel, I send herewith a letter recommending your appointment as Lt. Col. in the adjt dept. The letter is written to the adj & Insp Gen’l as a published order ...you van hand it to the secr of War or the President if you prefer. ... I am desirous of seeing you back at as early a period as possible ... Please go down on Mondayto Richmond and let me hear .. by telegraph. It is important that my staff be filled ...” Autograph Letter Signed “Ch. Jas. Faulkner” Martinsburg Aug. 21, 1853, 1pp., written to noted historian, Benson Lossing. Faulkner sends Lossing a number of items of Faulkner’s father presumable at Lossing’s request for publication. VG. Confederate Broadside, 5-1/2” x 15,” The Daily Picayune” EXTRA, New Orleans, Dec. 19 (1861) 2pm with Headline and report “ARRIVAL of FAULKNER at NORFOLK.” Faulkner was arrested by the Federal government and released from Fort Warren at this time. Framed engraving 4” x 4” “Residence of Hon. C.J. Faulkner. nd c1870. VG. Autograph Document Signed Chas. J. Faulkner on Riggs Bank Check, August 30, 1877. VG. Two printed Court of Appeals documents in which Faulkner represented the appellants.
