A good war-date new Southern volunteer's letter, 2pp. 4to, written by Corp. Alexander Porter Morse, Co. I (Morgan Rangers), 1st Louisiana Cavalry, "Camp Morgan, [St. Coupee, La.], October 10, 1861" to his mother Margaretta S. Morse (Wederstrandt), in part: "I take advantage of the departure of one our company for New Orleans to send you a few hurried lines. Your letter…reached me…just before drill and…imagine what satisfaction it gave me…your son…is very fond of camp life and is certain he will enjoy it much more when changed for a now active and exciting campaign. We were all somewhat taken aback…by hearing that we would probably remain in the state until December, or else leave for Memphis and go into winter quarters…my bed for the first and second nights…was composed of corn shucks and grass…yesterday we were supplied with blankets…I have been up before the sun rose, watered, cleaned and fed my horse. Tuesday morning we were mustered into the service of the Confederate States of America by Lieut. Gill of Leake's Company. It is whispered that our camp is to be moved about ten miles further down the river for a change. Our company has been christened the Morgan Rangers. My hair is cut so short you could hardly hold it…yr devoted son, A. P. Morse". Negligible tape stain effecting right margin, else VG
