Great war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 1 1/2pp. 4to., written by Corp. Alexander Porter Morse, Co. I (Morgan Rangers), 1st Louisiana Cavalry, "Camp Morgan, [St. Coupee, La.], Nov. 16, 1861" to his father Isaac E. Morse (a former Louisiana state supreme court justice), in part: "We are ordered to report at Baton Rouge…we will…remain there a week…and then leave for Kentucky by steamboat. Capt. Keep's Company passed here last night. I had a few words with George Furdurd who is a private in that company. Leake's Rangers go up this morning. We will start from here Monday evening and ride down to Baton Rouge by land. Please leave word at Pettes, Bostock & Tuttle's…of our departure for the capitol of the state…your devoted son, A. P. Morse. The non-commissioned officers will probably mess together & maybe you had better [?] over & sell Butler. Consult Ma & act as you think best. A. P. Morse. We can’t find out whether our pay is sixteen or 26 dollars a month." On the verso Morse adds, in full: "Camp Morgan St. Coupee, La., Nov. 16, 1861. I Alexander Porter Morse, hereby give to my father, Isaac E. Morse, of New Orleans, my power of attorney; to act for me in all case for me. Alexander Porter Morse, 3rd Corporal Co. I, 1st Regt. La. Cavalry". VG
