Great war-date Confederate soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Corp. Alexander Porter Morse, Co. I (Morgan Rangers), 1st Louisiana Cavalry, Baton Rouge, Nov. 27, 1861 to his mother Margaretta S. Morse (Wederstrandt), in part: "…I determined to write you as I might not have an opportunity of so doing again until we reach Memphis. Capt. Williams' & Capt. Campbell's start with us here…Capt Ditto's & Capt. Benjamin's will join us above this city…Capt. Le Jeune returned from New Orleans…bringing…the guns & rifles…you had better direct your letter to me at Memphis…we are all much delighted at the prospect of leaving and the opportunity that will soon be afforded us of really assisting the country and defending our rights and whether I come back or not my conduct will be such as to give you pleasure and make you proud of my course…you and our family all know what inducements I had to remain at home…I choose the harder & more dangerous one because I deem it to be the path of duty & appreciating the command of the Spartan Matron. I will return with my shield or on it…the Lincoln horde will find many Thermopholie's & thousands like that gallant band who will dispute a passage at every pass. I will send you a copy of a camp smog composed for our company by a member of it…it begins thus. I. Come fall in, Morgan Rangers the stirring time has come and martial notes are sounded, by the fife and on the drum. II. We are going to Kentucky, to give them our aid…we think it good. Goodbye, Porter". Negligible pin holes at left margin, else VG
