Confederate officer's letter, 2pp. folio, written by Lt. Alexander Porter Morse, CSA Ordnance Department, New Iberia, [La.], January 13, 1863, to his mother Margaretta S. Morse (Wederstrandt), in part: "…Malcolm [Asst. Surgeon Edward Malcolm Morse] is still in the Army of Gen. Bragg in Tennessee, while Nathan [Capt. Charles Nathan Morse] continues at Vicksburg…Charley Luzenburg [Captain 13th Louisiana] was well & at Vicksburg when I last heard of him; the same of Joe McNeil; Ben Kennedy, J. O. Nixon, Bill Minor…all well and in Tennessee…my room mate however of Princeton days young Reading of Miss. was killed at Malvern Hill. [Pvt. Abram B. Reading, 21st Miss. DOW July 4, 1862. While at Princeton in 1860 he was nineteen.] Henry Marks [Capt. 10th Louisiana, Army of Northern Virginia] fell on the same field as Larry Nicholls. [Capt. 8th Louisiana, Army of Northern Virginia] I met Frank [Nicholls] a few weeks since he lost an arm at Port Republic. He has just been made Brig. Gen. [Francis Redding Tillou Nicholls originally Capt. 8th Louisiana, appointed brig. gen. Oct. 14, 1862, he was wounded so many times during the war that his men thought he was jinxed.]…Gen. J. K. Duncan died at Knoxville some weeks since. He is very much regretted as an officer and a friend…I stay with Mr. & Mrs. Lewis on their plantation…Joe Brent, formerly of St. Martinsville, is now major & chief of ordnance on Taylor's staff…we had a "Military Fete" on the Island on New Year's day. It was quite a grand affair; dinner & party, music etc. It was gotten up and given by the Crescent City Regiment…plenty of pretty girls & we have delightful riding parties consisting sometimes of ten or twelve couples…may position here is very pleasant…I remain yr affect. son, A.
