TAYLOR, Richard (1826-1879) was the son of President Zachary Taylor and brother-in-law of Jefferson Davis. He fought with Louisiana units and participated in the Seven Days battle, Front Royal, Winchester, Milliken's Bend and Port Hudson. He was highly regarded by Stonewall Jackson and was particularly effective in the recruitment and training of troops. He was promoted to Lieutenant General in April of 1864. War-date Letter Signed. 7-1/2" x 10" on a single sheet of blue laid paper, Head Quarters 8th Brigade Det. Va. Camp Esperance, March 24, 1862, to Brigadier General Winder Commanding at Richmond, Virginia, signed "R. Taylor Brig Genl Comdg". An interesting letter concerning some men in Taylor's command who have gone AWOL in Richmond. "... I have received reliable information that several men and officers of my command are within the precincts of Richmond without proper paper, and would request that the necessary orders be issued for their arrest and return to this Brigade. Among them are the Private whose description I herewith enclose, and Lieut Dickson of Wheats Battalion. These two are positively reported as being in the City, and both without any authority."
