GIST, States Rights (1831 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin. Endorsement Signed "S.R. Gist." Excised from a larger document to an overall size of 3" x 3-1/4", General Gist has placed his signature from the headquarters of the Eastern Division on June 25, 1862, just nine days after successfully defending James Island during an attempt by Federal forces to capture Charleston at the Battle of Secessionville. The piece is mounted to another piece of paper. Has some loss and staining, signature is excellent.
