Confederate war dated letter written by “John M. Williams, served in Adams cavalry, 6pp on adversity paper, with original cover, in pencil, Hinds County Miss., May 18, 1863, VG. In part, “We was ordered from Natches on the 26th .. after a body of Yankee Cavalry that was making a raid through central Mississippi. It was one of the most important & fatiguing trips I ever witnessed. Our Squadron, 100 men, left Natches at 12 O’clock at night in a hard rain, got to Fayette at day light & stayed 4 hours then went to Union Church that day. Had a fight with 1200 Yankee Cavalry after fighting about 1/4 hour they opened up on us with artillery. we then fell back and sent from Col. Adams to join us. .. Col. A did join us that night with 200 men and a section of artillery. We expected to attack them, but they had left... We run them for four days and nights without sleeping one wink except what we did on our horses ... one company of mounted infantry engaged near the Louisiana line and whipped them killing a Lt. Col & several men ... the Yankees taking Port Gibson ... before they had been there one hour our Squadron under command of Lt. Col. Wood charged the town and within 300 yards of 500 Yankee cavalry. we captured 4 prisoners .. on our trip we captured about 30 prisoners & 10 wagons & killed 5 men ....”
