Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Private George A. Weldon, Co. "E," 2oth Georgia Infantry, 4pp., 8vo, "Camp 20th Georgia Volunteers, Near Winchester, Virginia, October 7th / 62," to a friend, reading, in part: "…I got sick…and left Maryland a few days before the battle of Sharpsburg. I was not in the one at Manassas either…I have been in some battles but never have had the opportunity of killing any Yankees…I am much pleased with Maryland. It is a beautiful country though I meet with some Union people yet they treated us with all hospitality…I expect that you know as much about the last battle as I can tell you…Several of the company wounded…" Weldon managed to get into the fray and then some. He was wounded himself at Chickamauga, promoted to corporal and surrendered at Appomattox. Damp stains; some loss along left edge. Good, but legible
