Unique solicitation on “Confederate Home, Charleston, S.C.” letterhead, May 6, 1885, 1pp., VG. In part, “The Ladies of the Board respectfully ask your assistance in the sale of these tickets for the performance ... Saturday May 9th ... each will entitle the holder to a reserved seat ...” Also included is the aforementioned ticket. The Confederate Home is a retirement home located in an early 19th-century building at 60 Broad St., Charleston, South Carolina. The building started as a double tenement in about 1800, built for master builder Gilbert Chalmers. In 1867, sisters Mary Amarinthia Snowden and Isabell S. Snowden established the Home for the Mothers, Widows, and Daughters of Confederate Soldiers (the Confederate Home) and operated their housing program at the house. The Confederate Home bought the property outright in 1874.
