Dinkins is affirming his encounters and observations of General Robert E. Lee. In small part, “.. seated by the driver of the ambulance said ‘Boys, theres Marse Robert’ - instantly the entire regiment, officers and men ... hats off yelled and yelled and yelled! The demonstration had no effect on him whatever. ... During the battle of Sharpsburg, my brigade .. was hurried to the left .. We passed the Rockbridge Artillery Company, which was hotly engaged. I saw General lee astride ‘Traveler’, standing aside a casson ... General Lee sat as composed as if he had been sitting in his church pew ....”
