STANTON, Edwin M. (1814-1869) Secretary of War under Lincoln. Autograph Letter Signed, “Edwin M. Stanton” March 13, 1858, Gulf of California, Steamer Sonora, 4pp., VG. Stanton writes his partner, P.H. Watson while enroute to California at the bequest of the Buchanan administration to resolve what would be known as the Reaper Case. In part, “I have finished writing out my agreement in the Reaper Case and will send it to on my arrival at Sanfrancisco ...” Stanton set sail from New York on February 19, 1858 aboard the Star of the West, along with his son Eddie, James Buchanan, Jr., the President's nephew, and Lieutenant H. N. Harrison, who was assigned to Stanton's detail by the Navy. After a tempestuous voyage, the company docked in Kingston, Jamaica. Afterwards, Stanton and his entourage landed in Panama, and left there on a ship three times larger than the one on which they came, the Sonora. On March 19 the company finally docked in San Francisco, and bunkered at the International Hotel. ... plus, a second Autograph Letter Signed, “Edwin M. Stanton” Washington City, November 11, 1868, P.H. Watson, 1pp., VG. In part, “Not having heard from you respecting the injuries by explosion mentioned in your last note, I have become alarmed ...”
