ELLSWORTH, Elmer 91837-1861) Colonel of Zouaves who was killed by James Jackson, while taking down Confederate flag from the Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia. Ellsworth was a Chicagoan who was a close friend of President Lincoln's family and accompanied him on his pre-inaugural trip to Washington. He moved into the White House and played regularly with the Lincoln children. He worked in Lincoln's law office in August 1860, assisted him during fall campaign, and had a clerkship with State Auditor Jesse Dubois. Document Signed Twice “E.E. Elsworth” on 8” x 6,” partially printed, 2pp., Chicago, May 31, 1859. On the front, Ellsworth and four others sign a pledge “do acknowledge ourselves bound to pay Wm. N. Bissell Governor ... the penal sum of One Thousand, Two hundred dollars .. that if said E.E. Ellsworth, Captain of the Cadets of the Sixtieh Regiment ... have in readiness for use, the arms and other equipments ...” On the reverse, Ellsworth makes an official request of the Governor for arms and again signs the document. Presented in double glassed, modern frame.
