A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George Bender [WIA Second Bull Run, Va., 8/29/62], Battery B, (Cooper's Battery), 1st Penn. Light Artillery, [Great Falls, Md.], Oct. 27, 1861, to his father, in part: "…we are still on the old sod of old Virginia …I guess I kin stand stand it. We was out on a tramp the other day about fifteen or twenty miles and did not see any rebels but our pickets shot two or three of there pickets. They shot at our pickets first, but did not kill any of us…ours fired back and killed some of they. They fetch in a hat with the brains in it. It looks pretty hard, but we don't care for that is what we came for…we pitch in every chance we get. We are looking for a fight every day…you said that the boys was riding my colt. Tell them not to spoil it for I want to ride it to see the gals when I get home. That is if I ever get home…I hope it will be soon for the grub don't suit me…the gals is mighty scarce here and cant run around much…nothing more but remain your sun, Shorty Bender [to] David Bender…". The original transmittal cover endorsed by U. S. Representative JESSE LAZEAR (1804-1877) from Pennsylvania. VG
