M1818 Cavalry Saber, 38" in scabbard with 32" blade, ca. 1820, Middleton, Connecticut. Learning his trade as an armourer during the American Revolution, Nathan Starr of Connecticut was awarded U.S. Government contracts for cavalry sabers in 1798 and again in 1818. The weapons are characterized by a deeply curved blade topped by an iron stirrup hilt and were intended primarily for distribution to militia cavalry. This example is one of 10,600 made under the second contract and is stamped US P LS N STARR at the top of the blade. The "P" indicates the sword has been "proved" while the "LS" denotes saber's government inspector, possibly one Luther Sage who was active during this period. Scattered rust throughout with a small section of leather missing from one side of the wooden grip. Very scarce, Good condition.
