Union soldier’s letter written by A(lbert) H. Trescott who enlisted September 30, 1861 into "Batty E" Co. RI 1st Light Artillery, and died of disease July 28, 1862. The four page letter, November 16, 1861, on beautiful colored Ellsworth patriot letterhead. Although Trescott provides details of army life, the treasures are the two relics he sends home. the identification is on the envelope, “You will probably recollect that I wrote you I would send you a piece of Pohick Church.(He includes a small piece of wood upon which he writes ‘WASHINGTON Pohick’) I forgot to put it in but send it now with a small piece of the Bedstead on which Jackson the murderer of Col. Ellsworth slept.”
