Group of THREE war dated letters, 11 pages all writen by “John H. Metcalf” who enlisted August 8, 1861 into Comapany A, Pennsylvania 23rd Infantry. Camp dare, March 30, 1862, signed as John. In part, “... an expedition .. passed through Alexander ... had a nice view of Mt. Vernon ... You would laugh to see the Monitor, she is very small and has a cylinder on top that looks like a Cheese Box ... we passed through Hampton, every house is burned except 2 small ones ...” Camp at Fair Oaks, June 9, 1862, VG. In part, “... all was quite till Sunday morning when we heard some firing ... All at once the Rebs made a charge on Bakers California regiment ... all that was not killed went back faster than they commenced ... Gen McClellan that there is only going to be one more battle ...”; On the Left of Fredericksburg, Decemeber 14, 1862, VG. In part, “... we arrived at Fredericksburg about 12 o’clock ... we could see the Rebs across the river. our batteries were throwing shell amongst them ... about 5 o’clock we started to cross the river but the order was countermanded ... we moved along very cautious toward a large mansion ... the next morning we were drawn up in battle line ... struck a man in front of company and killed him instantly ...”
