A good group of three war-date Union soldier's letters written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry. The first appears on patriotic stationery, 3pp. 8vo., Camp Kearney, [Washington], Nov. 20, 1861 to his cousin, in part: "…we are encamped about 2 miles from Alexandria on a hill side between Forts Ellsworth, which is in front of us, and Fort Taylor, which is behind us on still higher ground. Our encampment has a fine view of the country and…the Potomac…we had a grand review yesterday…PS. I have not written to Uncle Jno. Bogert yet, and as I hear he is Secesh and has not been converted yet. I don't think I shall write as I have nothing to do with Rebels…J. A. Hudson." VG Also included is a 3pp. 8vo., letter written by Hudson from Washington on Sept. 22, 1861. This letter has a nicely tinted illustration of the U. S. Capitol showing the building's dome completed. The letter's content includes mention of their drill ground and of being brigaded with the 55th New York, 8th Michigan plus regiments from Albany and New Jersey. Unfortunately, a family member saw fit to remove one inch of text on the last page, else very readable and interesting…PLUS: a third letter dated Jan. 18, 1862 from Camp Kearney, Va. talking the prospects of a forward movement. All three VG. (3 letters)
