A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, Williamsport, Md., Sept. 22, 1862, to his cousin, in part: "…we have been roving all over the country since we left Harrison's Landing, have got into a few scrapes and been lucky enough to get out of them all with whole skins…now we are told that we have 48 hours to make a march of 100 miles to Cumberland Gap. We were…far north as Gettysburg, Penn. last Sunday. My mare recd a slight wound in the leg by a piece of bursted shell night before last…a fellow at my side…was struck in the leg just above the knee by a musket ball. This is about the nearest I have come to being hit although balls whistled past much near my head then was reasonable…what about the draft law and drafting? Lem wrote me…that he has enlisted, but he did not give me the number of the Regt. [his brother Lemuel H. Hudson, 6th New York Hvy. Art., DOD 3/26/63] I guess it had none yet…J. A. Hudson…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
