War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James A. Hudson, Co. H, 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry, "Camp at Old Town, Md., Dec. 11, 1862", to his cousin concerning Lincoln's annual message to Congress in which he proposed compensated emancipation and colonization of newly freed slaves, reading, in part: "…the Potomac & canal froze up tight in 2 nights…[Jim] Potter [farrier] has not much to do these days…well Old Abe has been driving the quill again. What do you think of the Message? How do you like his proposed terms for a settlement?…J. A. Hudson. direct Co. H, 1st N. Y. C. Old Town, Md, via Cumberland." VG
